Overview

The University of Tasmania is one of the country’s oldest universities and one of the country’s top research institutions. With around 2,000 international students on campus and another 1,300 or so studying at the UTAS through distance education, the University is experienced in meeting the needs of students from overseas.

With many students studying at the doctoral level, the UTAS has strong connections and affiliations with research centres in the wider community and its pursuit of excellence has attracted a large number of research grants in recognition of its high standards and good results.


Location

The University is located in Tasmania, Australia’s southern island state, and it has two campuses, one ion Hobart and one in Launceston. Tasmania is known internationally for its wilderness regions, its parks and its overall natural beauty. Recreational activities range from wilderness trekking through white water rafting to windsurfing, and city life is friendly, relaxing and interesting.


Campuses

Hobart campus is located on 100 hectares at Sandy Bay and on the River Derwent. Not far from the city centre, this campus hosts the Tasmanian Conservatorium of Music and the Centre for the Arts, with the uni’s Medical School close to Royal Hobart Hospital. There is also on campus student accommodation and accommodation in the surrounding suburbs, the Sport and Recreation Centre, the Central Science Laboratory, student health service and various shops, computer labs and library.

Launceston campus is set on 50 hectares overlooking the River Tamar and not far from city centre. Facilities include Sport and Recreation Centre, the University Bookshop, computer labs and library, various cafes and other shops, while students can find accommodation in the surrounding suburbs.


Courses

UTAS offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in the Australian Maritime College, Arts, Business, Education, Health Sciences, Law, Science, Engineering & Technology.


English Courses

The University’s English Language Centre offers General English, Academic English, and Direct Entry Academic Program (DEAP) to international students, as well as Full-Time IELTS Preparation Course, Foundation Studies, and Study Tours & Short Courses.


Entry Requirements

Undergraduate admission generally requires the successful completion of a recognised equivalent of Australian Year 12 High School and an IELTS of 6.5 with no band less than 6.0. Some degrees require higher IELTS scores.

Postgraduate entry generally requires the successful completion of the recognised equivalent of an Australian Bachelor degree and an IELTS of 6.0, 6.5 or 7.0 with no band less than 6.0 or 6.5, depending on the course chosen.

Enrolment dates

For some courses, applications close in August the previous year, while for others applications close two weeks before semester commences. Students are advised to apply well in advance of their intended starting dates to allow time for processing applications.


Student activities

Student clubs provide occasions and equipment for students to engage in a wide range of social and recreational activities and on campus cafes and restaurants offer refreshment and convenient spaces for socialising while studying. Students also often organise their own spontaneous and informal social and recreational activities.
