You studied hard to gain the technical skills and knowledge needed for a career in ICT. But where to from here? How can you kick start your Australian career in ICT? CQUniversity Australia and the Australian Computer Society (ACS) have the answer!

From 2009, CQUniversity Australia is facilitating an exciting new program for
former international students who have graduated from a university within
Australia and are seeking permanent residency. It’s called the ACS Professional Year (PYear) Program. It provides an additional pathway from university to employment within Australia.

It is a 12 month ‘job-readiness’ program to equip you with the professional skills needed for a successful career in the Australian workforce, including:

  • up to 12 months of practical training and workshops
  • a 12 week ‘hands-on’ internship with a host company
  • access to networking opportunities and
  • professional development as a graduate member of the Australian ICT industry’s professional body (ACS)
  • on successful completion of a Professional Year program specified by the Minister a participant may be awarded 10 points under the General Skilled Migration points test.

What will I gain?
The ACS PYear is about ‘job-readiness’. It will prepare you for a career in the Australian workforce. After completing the program you may be eligible for additional points needed to apply for permanent residency and establish a
long-term career in Australia.

Program Structure

Whilst completing the ACS Professional Year Program you will undertake the
following elements:

  • Opening boot camp (1 day)
  • CQUniversity Professional Year
  • Orientation Program (1 day)
  • An intensive training course in Australian
  • workplace culture (130 hours)
  • An intensive training course in Professional Business Communication (130 hours)
  • An internship to enable you to gain workplace experience in the ICT industry (240 hours over 12 weeks)
  • An online module of work in professional elements (130 hours)
  • Closing boot camp and Graduation
  • Opening boot camp (Introduction workshop)

This one-day workshop will help you assess your work capabilities and provide you with insights into work and job availability in Australia. After just one day, you’ll have a better understanding of your value to Australian employers.

Australian workplace culture

During this intensive training course, you’ll learn about common work practices
and values operating in Australia companies. You’ll discover the ins and outs of the Australian workplace and how to:

  • develop a career plan
  • write a resume
  • perform effectively in interviews
  • understand and respond to employers’ expectations
  • understand occupational health and safety guidelines
  • contribute positively to workplace diversity.

Business/professional communication
Employers in Australia most often look for former international students who
are skilled in business and professional communications. This module will provide you with practical skills to communicate successfully with people at all levels in the Australian workplace. You’ll learn how to chair and participate in meetings, write reports and other documents relevant to the workplace and give presentations to work colleagues, managers and clients.

Work experience internship

One of the most valuable aspects of the ACS PYear is the practical ICT workplace experience you will undertake with a well-respected company. Your career and employment skills will be expanded with an ePortfolio of work and a proven ability to operate in the Australian workplace.

Professional element

The online unit will provide you with an understanding of risk management,
legal requirements, service obligations and ethical standards in Australian work environments. You’ll also learn how to apply your university knowledge to solve practical problems in the workplace. What’s more, the ACS PYear will also connect you with ICT professionals around Australia through ACS networking events. You’ll learn professional networking skills and
gain valuable industry contacts.

Ending boot camp (Closing workshop)

The final boot camp will be a chance for assessment and celebration! You’ll take part in mock interviews and present your career plans, CVs, capability statements, portfolios and job applications complete with covering letter for the dream job in a company of your choice. Then you’ll toast success with your fellow PYear graduates and meet and mingle with prospective employers and colleagues at the graduation ceremony.
